Day 1 Private Temple Adventure

Preah Vihear Temple is a Khmer temple located on a 525-meter cliff on Dangrek Mountain in Preah Vihear Province in northern Cambodia and bordering Kantra Lak (Ampe) District in Sisaket Province in eastern Thailand. In 1962, after a long dispute between Thailand and Cambodia over the majority ownership of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in The Hague, the temple was ceded to Cambodia. Preah Vihear temple is the most magnificent of all the temples built during the six centuries of the Khmer Empire. An important structure of the spiritual life of the empire, it was supported and modified by successive kings and thus contained many elements of architectural style. The temple of Preah Vihear is unusual among the Khmer temples built along the north-south axis rather than having a simple rectangular layout oriented to the east. The temple is named after Cambodia's Preah Vihear province, which is now bordered by Khao Phra Wihan National Park, which borders And Sisaket Province, Thailand, and thus the temple is most accessible. On July 7, 2008, the Temple of Preah Vihear was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Koh Ker Group was located in Preah Vihear province, the capital of the Khmer Empire between 928 and 944 under the leadership of King Jayavarman IV and his son Hasvarman II. After the Khmer Empire was established at Angkor (Rolous), Jayavarman IV moved the capital in 928, almost 100 km northeast of Koh Ker. Here a large number of temples were built under his reign until his successors returned to Angkor about twenty years later. Koh Ker Temple Complex is covered by Prasat Thom, a mountain temple 30 meters above the plains and surrounding forests. Great views await visitors at the end of the adventure. The garuda statue in the rock still protects the upper part, even though it is partially covered at this time. There are many temples or pagodas throughout Koh Ker. A couple still show off a huge statue on yoni providing space for many. Exits for purified water by running it over Linga are visible in the outer walls of one of them. In other cases, three temples stand side by side dedicated to Brahma, Shiva and Vishnu. Most of them are surrounded by libraries and enclosures, and many also have canals. At that time, the roof was still made of wood. Today, only holes for beams remain in the stone structure.

Beng Mealea Temple (this name means "lotus pond") is located at the foot of Kulen Mountain. It was built as a Hindu temple, but there are some sculptures depicting Buddha paintings. Its main material is sandstone, and it is not widely repaired, with thick trees and bushes growing in the center of the towers and courtyards, and many of its stones in large piles. For many years it was difficult to reach, but a road was just built to Koh Ker temple across Beng Mealea and more and more people came to visit Up. Built in the 12th century, many scholars believe it to be a model for Angkor Wat. It is a great temple, but it is still very much lost in the forest.
